MOSS as a Multimedia - Object Server – Extended Summary –

چکیده
Today, most multimedia (MM) applications store their data objects in a proprietary way, usually in files on some storage device in some format that is tailored exactly to the necessities of this one application. But MM data objects (MMOs) are expected to exist for long periods of time and to be accessed by many different applications. Additionally, the employment of new opportunities offered by the technical progress (new media, devices etc.) must be possible. The demands for application neutrality (application-independent data management) and data independence (abstraction from different storage formats, compression techniques and storage devices) are obvious. Database management systems (DBMSs) have been identified as the ideal means to guarantee these issues. The integration of MMOs into these systems leads to multimedia DBMSs (MMDBS) [Meye91]. The design of a MMDBS can be based mainly on two kinds of DBMSs: extensible relational systems of different flavors [Bato90, Care92, Stone87] and object-oriented DBMS [Kim90]. All existing systems, even if they are designed for complex objects, use only conventional datatypes or bit fields with no semantics defined on them in form of special operations [Kaec93]. The storage and retrieval of MMOs demands for flexible mechanisms to incorporate new storage techniques and devices which are only partially available in these systems. Other important issues are the development of novel, medium-specific access paths for MMOs that reflect the semantically rich contents of MMOs and the design of generalized interfaces for the MMOs. The multimedia object storage system (MOSS) designed at the University of Erlangen is a standalone system that allows to focus on the questions related to the storage and retrieval of MMOs. MOSS has a highly modular structure, which is ideal to compare different solutions for the issues mentioned above. Furthermore, it is integrated in a client-server architecture.

A Framework for Managing Distributed Multimedia
This paper proposes a framework for managing distributed multimedia services and applications. We have developed a set of management services needed to monitor and control distributed multimedia applications and their supporting services. These management services have been developed using the object-oriented techniques. A management API has also been developed, which can be used for quick and ...
متن کاملA Video Streaming File Server Framework for Digital Video Broadcasting Environments
SUMMARY This letter presents the design and implementation of a video streaming file server system, which has been implemented in the context of a distributed digital multimedia broadcasting environment that has been prototyped. To make a performance analysis of file systems and distributed object services for continuous media (CM) provisioning, we validate the performance of the system against...
متن کاملAn Overview Of Multimedia Proxy Servers
This paper gives an overview of the functions of the proxy servers in accessing multimedia objects over the Internet. The proxy servers use the cache replacement policies to select the cold objects to be removed from cache to release space. They use the object partitioning methods to divide each multimedia object into cacheable and non-cacheable parts. When the client bandwidth is insufficient ...
متن کاملThe Object-oriented Development of Multimedia Information Systems
As object-oriented analysis and design techniques become more mature, the promises of object-orientation become more realizable. The advent of multimedia hardware and software technology give rise to a need for generalized multimedia data access methods. This chapter discusses the advantages of using object-oriented analysis and design techniques to design and develop a general client-server ar...
متن کاملA Design and Implementation of Museum Multimedia Information System
A museum multimedia information system is designed not only for entertainment, but also for education and research. Within the system, a huge number of intellectual assets is stored in a multitimedia database. Users can query the multimedia database and retrieve information matching the specified conditions. In this paper, we successfully apply the EER (Extended Entity-Relationship) model to de...
